My students are encouraged to choose research projects according to their particular interests, use advanced microbiological techniques, achieve thorough understanding of geochemistry, learn to write and publish in at least one scientific journal, and present their data and findings at a national meeting. My group has averaged 6 to 10 students, postdocs, technicians, and visiting scientists for the past several years. One postdoctoral associate that I supervised (Sherry Dollhopf) obtained a prestigious NSF Fellowship in Microbial Biology. Undergraduate students in my laboratory have presented at national scientific meetings, coauthored papers, and gone on to graduate careers at good institutions (NC State Univ., University of Florida).
My graduate students have all obtained research or travel fellowships from national scientific organizations and published multiple papers from their theses in high quality journals. Two of my Ph.D. students, April Smith and Lainie Petrie, graduated in December, 2004, and each was awarded an Outstanding Graduate Student Award in our department in biological and chemical oceanography, respectively.
